When I feel overwhelmed by mental clutter and life in general, it’s time to pick a peppermint leaf from the garden. I rub it between my thumb and forefinger, close my eyes and inhale. The cool, refreshing aroma clears away the cobwebs of my mind. I’m always amazed how one small leaf so easily revives both mind and spirit.
Yes, peppermint is one of my favorite herbs. Faithfully it grows in my garden, always there when needed. I also keep a good supply of peppermint teabags in the kitchen cupboard. Because I am not one of those people who hops out of bed, instantly awake and ready to roll, a cup of peppermint tea is is the perfect way to start the day.
Did you know that peppermint is known for its ability to ease nausea, motion sickness and indigestion? Ancient Romans would chew on a sprig of peppermint after feasts. Later, Europeans used mint to make after dinner teas. Modern science has confirmed that taking mint after a large measl relaxes and soothes the stomach.
Peppermint is a playful herb. Bunches of fresh peppermint can be harvested to make a sweet smelling bouquet to freshen the kitchen or scent the home when guests are coming. Float some in your bath for a refreshing soak or drop some in your water bottle. The mint infused water is sure to put a spring in your step. Peppermint also enhances the flavor of sugar cookies, brownies and hot chocolate. Today I brought some candy canes, thinking to stir my next cup of hot chocolate with one of them.
